Are you a SkillsUSA high school member in a skilled trades pathway? Do you plan to compete in skilled trades or leadership contests at the 2024 National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC)? If so, you may be eligible for a travel scholarship worth up to $1,500. SkillsUSA is providing the scholarships in partnership with Harbor Freight Tools for Schools. The U.S. has a labor shortage in the trades, but Gen Z is putting on their tool belts to become the next generation of skilled trades workers. In a survey by software company Jobber, 75% of high school and college-age people said they would be interested in vocational schools offering paid, on-the-job training. Shakari Byerly, managing partner at EVITARUS, shares the results of a recent poll of Los Angeles voters, parents and students. The survey showed that 87% of voters were convinced it was a mistake to remove skilled trades education from Los Angeles County high schools. Julianna Espinoza participated in the Los Angeles County skilled trades summer welding program at Port of Los Angeles High School. Julianna shared that her fellow students want the same opportunities at their high schools so they can pursue a career in the trades. Our recent Los Angeles County poll found that 83% of students support an increase of state and local funding to expand skilled trades classes in high schools. This National Welding Month, we want to celebrate the contributions of teachers, school leaders and our partners in preparing the next generation of welders. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics over 400,000 work in the welding industry.
